The Centre is a community based, non-profit agency serving immigrants and
refugees regardless of their culture, region, gender or age. It has operated in
the Ottawa-Carleton region for over 40 years. Its holistic and multicultural
client-based programmes and services are available to all newcomers and the
community at large. They are welcomed and encouraged to take an active role in
the life and work of our agency. Its membership-elected board of directors
reflects the diverse ethnic, cultural and religious background of the community.

Provides service to social service agencies needing intervention in foreign
countries. Deals with child welfare and child protection cases; divorce and
custody issues; problems relating to family reunion, tracing; and difficulties
of refugees and immigrants when services are needed in the home country.

The Newcomers Settlement Services Programme provides services to new Canadian
communities. Services under the guise of the NSSP include the Immigrant
Settlement Adaptation Programme, Seniors Integration Programme, Lebanese and
Arab Women’s Support Services, Tobacco Reduction Strategy and Community
Development. Also available are interpretation, translation, escort and
referrals to the health and social sectors. Services are delivered in a
bilingual setting as well as in Arabic.

Provides information and service to landed immigrants wishing to become
Canadian citizens; provides service to citizens wishing proof of Canadian
citizenship Applications for proof of citizenship are accepted by mail except in
emergencies, which must be proved. Applications to become Canadian citizen are
processed by mail.
Provides computer-generated answers to questions most frequently asked by
clients on a 24-hour-a-day basis. Operators are available between 8am and 4pm
during business days for clients requiring further clarification or assistance.
Provides application kits to clients for extensions of visitor status,
applications for permanent residence and sponsorship applications in response to
telephone requests (24-hours per day). Provides verification of cost recovery
fee calculations for standard applications via telephone.

Community-based organization providing interpretation and translation
services in more than 60 languages and dialects, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
to agencies serving multilingual and multicultural clientele. Selects and trains
its interpreters professionally. All interpreters who are registered with CISOC
follow a code of professional conduct. CISOC believes in the efficient, accurate
and confidential nature of the delivery of services.

Free, at home, one-on-one, English language tutoring is provided by
volunteers to adult immigrants and refugees who, for a number of reasons, cannot
access regular language programmes. LINC 4, 5 Class, Intermediate Level Saturday
mornings 9am-1pm. Ongoing registration. Provides general settlement assistance
to its students.

The Family Reception Centre welcomes all newly arriving students (age 4 to
20), who speak a first language other than English and who will be living within
the OCDSB boundaries. The Centre will check documents for school, assess
students in literacy, numeracy, English and first language, contact schools for
placement ESL, ELD (English Literacy Development), regular programmes, special
needs). They will also check documents for immunizations and provide
information about the school and the community. It is open 12 months/year.
ADULTS LOOKING FOR ESL programmes for themselves are referred to the
programmes offered by the Board, through Continuing Education, at

Applicants need to phone to make an appointment and to bring with them their
immigration status document, previous school records, proof of address, Ontario
health card, and immunization records.
LANGUAGE CLASSES FOR NEW CANADIANS
English and French language classes for adults are offered by Boards of
Education as well as by other educational institutions and voluntary agencies
(see earlier in this chapter). Also, phone your Community Resource and Health
Centre (see Chapter 2) for programmes offered in your neighbourhood.
