Provides sustaining funds to community organizations that provide social services to residents of Ottawa-Carleton. The Directorate will purchase services that are consistent with its mandate and meet the needs of the community. The funds must be used to serve predominantly people on low-income.
Every year, the Directorate also provides one-time grants to agencies for new and innovative programmes and projects that address departmental priority areas.

Health Grants support innovative projects aimed at promoting health or preventing disease and disability. Health Grants provide start-up money for programmes while they wait for more permanent funding sources or support to new programmes on a trial basis in the region.

The priority areas for year 2000 Health Grants are: 

strategies that improve health by reducing risk-taking behaviour among young people (for example: unsafe sex, excessive alcohol use and exposure to safety hazards);

strategies that address self-care of health enhancement behaviours among children and adults (for example: physical activity, nutrition, medication use and reduced exposure to second-hand smoke).

Ontario’s largest foundation provides grants to voluntary organizations across the province, in the Arts and Culture, Environment, Sports and Recreation, as well as Social sectors. The Ontario Trillium Foundation makes strategic investments to build healthy, sustainable and caring communities in Ontario. Established in 1982 by the Government of Ontario, it is governed by a Board of Directors and operates at arm’s length from the provincial government.

United Way provides leadership both in funding important local programmes and in building a stronger community for the future. Every year, 1 in 3 local people are helped by United Way/Centraide. Through the work of 49 member agencies, and through "Community Building Grants", United Way/Centraide tackles poverty, protects and helps children and youth, reduces violence and abuse, helps families and individuals in crisis, brings down barriers to independence and strengthens the voluntary sector. Effective community groups demonstrating a critical need for financing may also be eligible for special or emergency grants.
