Those who qualify for Ontario’s Drug Benefit Programme can have prescriptions filled in Ontario, subject to a co-payment. A person licensed to practice in Ontario must prescribe the medication and the drug must be one that is an approved benefit. This programme covers the cost of about 3,000 quality-assured prescription drugs approved for payment by a committee of independent medical experts. To benefit from this programme, please take your prescription and your Health Card to a drugstore and tell the pharmacist that you are eligible for ODB. The pharmacist will check your eligibility on the government’s Health Network, which is a computer system that links Ontario pharmacies directly to the Ministry of Health. It identifies who is eligible for Ontario Drug Benefits and helps protect you by alerting your pharmacist to potential drug interactions when your prescription is being filled.

Persons who are 65 years of age or over are eligible for Drug Benefits if they are legally entitled to remain in Canada and reside in Ontario. (Drug coverage is effective on the latest of: the 1st day of the month following the 65 birthday or the first day of residence in Ontario). So are people who live in a long-term care facility, receiving home care services, and/or social assistance. Tourists, transients, and visitors to Ontario are not eligible.
