1- Br. Mumtaz Akhtar, chairman of Sadaqa Food Bank, past president of Ottawa Muslim Association and past HCI Chairperson and board member, was elected on January 12, 2012 to become the first Muslim Chair of the Board of Funeral Services of Ontario. Br. Mumtaz was appointed to the Board by the Ontario Government.
Functions of the Board of Funeral Services
The Funeral Directors and Establishments Act establishes a self-governing body to administer the Act and regulate the practices of funeral directors, transfer service operators, funeral service establishments and transfer services in accordance with the Act and the Regulations in order that the public interest may be served and protected.
Their Board is composed of thirteen members; eight funeral directors and five public persons. All members are appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council. The Funeral Directors and Establishments Act establishes five standing committees - Executive Committee, Licensing Committee, Complaints Committee, Discipline Committee and Compensation Fund Committee.

2- Br. Faisal Kutty, past HCI board member and representative was chosen one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the World in the area of Social Issues.
He was chosen by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre (RISSC) which is an independent research entity affiliated with the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought. The Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought is an international Islamic non-governmental, independent institute headquartered in Amman, the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The 500 Most Influential Muslims publication is part of an annual series that provides a window into the movers and shakers of the Muslim world. It gives valuable insight into the different ways that Muslims impact the world, and also shows the diversity of how people are living as Muslims today.
